The 5-Step Golden Rule for Buyers
1. Verify the Seller's ID
Always meet at the seller's home address listed on the V5C logbook (UK) or Title (US). Never meet in public car parks or remote locations.
2. Match the VIN
Check the VIN on the dashboard, the door pillar, and under the bonnet. All numbers must be identical and correspond with your Updated HPI Report.
3. Cold Start Check
Ensure the engine is stone-cold when you arrive. A pre-warmed engine can hide starting issues or smoking components.
4. Review MOT History
Look for recurring "Advisories." If the same issue appears year after year, it's a sign the owner is neglecting maintenance.
5. Secure Payment Only
Avoid cash for large sums. Use secure bank transfers and ensure you have a signed receipt with the seller's name and address.
